When this process becomes imbalanced and more tissue breakdown takes place than tissue buildup, an overuse injury occurs.

Strains affect muscles or tendons, the tissues that connect muscles to bones. Common strains occur in the lower back and in the hamstring, the muscle in the back of your thigh.
